Reparation for the General Moragues: beech, pine, sapele, brass, copper, polychromy.
Year 2000.
(Josep Moragues i Mas (1669-1715) was a Catalan general who fought on the Archduke Charles’ side during the War of the Spanish Succession.
Despite the value of that time to recognize the loser and to get away the military honours, he was arrested and executed in Barcelona on 1715. He was decapitated and carved up.
In addition, to make fun of the defeated people, his head was left at Portal de Mar in Barcelona during 12 years, although the several requests that his widow did to give him a decent burial.
The work:
The head is made with strong and thick wood that represents his aim which he fought for. It remains.
The body which is represented by a dress coat, is made with almond wood so it will wither as the body will die.
The half cage represents the prison and repression of his head which once it dies cutting it with an axe, it also gets released.
On the floor, his body blood fluids define the image of why he fought for.
